A Telescopic Perspective on Place: Superorganism Remastered.
Exhibited at Linden New Art for Melbourne Design Fringe 2023.
Superorganism is the reimagining of Kempsey's culturally important and historic public swimming pool to include a Neutral Buoyancy Training Facility for the Australian Space Agency, in the vision of a future Space City.
In the pursuit of common ground and collective identity, new industry is introduced into an existing conflict-ridden context as a vehicle for hope.
This is guided by a polemic of awkwardness, as the scheme identifies the swimming pool as a pivotal battle ground in desegregation and decolonisation. In the pursuit of plurality through architecture, the design of Superorganism is governed by the Star Code - a new planning code requirement which states that sight lines to key celestial bodies must be preserved. The work re-orientates architecture to other points of relevance while intensely focusing on the people who live there.
